Beneath the Surface

A History of Quality

Reclaimed Petit Granite has a beautiful weathered surface, consistent dark gray coloration and a fascinating backstory. It was originally used during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries as ballasts onboard Belgian shipping vessels. Perfectly cut squares of this hardy limestone were laid out in vast grids to help stabilize the weight of the ships while sailing. After reaching their destinations in Indonesia, the stones would be offloaded and replaced with spices and other cargo before returning to Belgium. The discarded ballasts were subsequently used to construct pathways and streets by resourceful locals. Though salvaged Petit Granite is increasingly rare, quarries of this distinctive limestone are still active throughout Belgium today.
